Position Title at SSUMC
Director of Music Ministries
What is your favorite scripture verse?
Psalm 46:10 - Be still, and know that I am God.
I love this verse. Life can be so chaotic. This verse puts everything into perspective and grounds me.
What keeps you working and worshiping at St. Stephen UMC?
The people! I have never been a part of a congregation that showed such tremendous love for each other. Come check out Sunday worship and join the family!
One thing you like most about St. Stephen UMC.
We’re a small church that believe, support, and implement BIG ministries. Our congregation regularly engages the community and champions social justice and equality. Check out all the various ministries that we provide and get involved! We’d love to have you!
What exactly do you do at St. Stephen UMC?
I have the honor and privilege of directing the choir! I also put on various benefit concerts throughout the year and have guest artists from the Fort Worth Opera, Dallas Theater Center, and even international artists ranging from Hong Kong to Tel Aviv.
What is your favorite aspect of ministry?
I love collaborating with our senior pastor in discovering musical pieces that will best enhance the worship experience for our congregation.
When did you know you wanted to serve God by going into ministry?
In music school, everything was very career-oriented and self-serving. As a professional musician, I couldn’t accept the fact that I did what I did merely for entertainment and financial gain. I discovered music ministry when I was 19. I served at an episcopal church as music director and I’ve never looked back. Where words fail, music speaks!
Tell us a little about your family.
My younger brother and I were both born in Lausanne, Switzerland. Both my parents were born in Hong Kong. My parents are restauranteurs and my brother is a government contract specialist at Bell Helicopter. He recently told me he received “classified clearance” from the government… I tell everyone my brother is an Asian James Bond.
Who are some of your heroes?
My parents. Nelson Mandela. Maya Angelou. Our men and women in the armed forces.
What was your nickname growing up?
Oscar the Grouch
What’s your quirkiest characteristic?
I’m kind of a mess. After worship, come say “hello!” and take a quick glance at the top of the organ… it’s my make-shift desk, and completely filled with music and notes.
Worst job you've ever held? Why?
I worked three part-time jobs to put myself through TCU. The one I dreaded the most was retail. Too stressful!
Any favorite movies or books?
Hero, by Perry Moore
Love in the Time of Cholera, by Gabriel García Márquez
Bellweather Rhapsody, by Kate Racculia
The Interestings, by Meg Wolitzer
Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn
All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr
Are there any pets in your household?
YES! I love dogs! I have a golden doodle named Lady, and a wheaten terrier/chow chow named Teddy Bear. My parents also have two dogs - a yorkshire terrier named Sir Nicholas, and a bichon frise named Lord Henry. My parents give weird names - example: my name is Oscar, and my brother’s name is Yannick-Leslie.
What is your educational history?
I graduated Lamar High School in 2005, and received my Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance from TCU in 2009.
Are you a good student? Why or why not?
I’m embarrassed to admit that I wasn’t a very good student. I craved real-world experience! Reading and learning about something never excited me. Going out and actually DOING something was how I learned best.
What kind of music/media do you have on your iPod?
I have very strange taste in music. My iPod is filled with opera and music from the band, Muse. I’m also big fan of Rufus Wainwright.
What is your favorite TV show as a child?
Who's your favorite Biblical character?
Mary Magdalene for her unflinching bravery, unwavering loyalty, and endless love for Jesus.
Have you ever had an embarrassing moment? Please share!
I once fell off the stage in a performance. Another time, I was conducting our choir in a very intense piece. The tip of my baton hit the podium, flew into the air, and landed who knows where. I conducted the rest of the piece with my hands. I’m a clumsy mess.
What’s your favorite toy? Why?
This is incredibly nerdy, but I have a replica of Professor McGonagall’s wand from Harry Potter. I chase my dogs around the house with it.
So, what gets on your nerves?
My horrid sight reading skills on the piano.
You have a unique hobby. What is it?
I collect beautifully-bound journals. They’re so beautiful I never write in them…
One thing I’m not sure that I want anyone to know is...
I used to be Southern Baptist. Yikes.
